Abstract

Teacher socioemotional competencies have emerged as a variable of growing interest in contemporary educational research. This article analyzes the role of these competencies as a predictor of academic achievement in preschool children aged 3 to 6 years. A quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional design was adopted. The sample consisted of 68 teachers and 247 children from 12 public educational centers in an urban area of Cuenca. The Emotional Competence Scale for Teachers (ECED), adapted for the Spanish-speaking context, was used to assess teacher socioemotional competencies, while academic performance was measured using official quarterly evaluation records. Results indicated significant positive correlations between the dimensions of emotional awareness, emotional regulation, and social skills of the teacher and the students' academic indicators (r = .42 to .61, p < .01). Multiple regression analysis indicated that teacher socioemotional competencies explain 38.4% of the variance in academic achievement (R² = .384, F = 21.73, p < .001). It is concluded that investing in socioemotional training for early childhood educators is a high-impact strategy for improving educational outcomes from an early age.
